Be a Woman Luxe Scarf

  • Lalela scarves feature inspiring designs from young artists in Lalela after school programs. Proceeds from each scarf sale go towards helping young innovators find their voice and overcome the narrative of poverty through the transformative power of arts education.

This artwork was created during a special collaboration between the multi-cultural and multidisciplinary Gabonese artist, Owanto and Lalela's 8th-grade Female empowerment class of 2017 at Silikamva High.

The artwork from this scarf came to life when Owanto showed the girls her neon piece, BE A WOMAN, and challenged them to write words that signify the ways they thought of themselves and values attributed to women as a whole. The background of the scarf is meant to be green like a blackboard, alluding to the classroom, where these young women get the power and confidence to change their lives.

The artists names are Andisiwe, Athenkasi, Benelinah, Emihle, Gitta, Lilitha, Makomborero, Moesha, Okuhle, Siyanda, Tanaka, Wamanda, Yolanda, Nokwanda and Panashe.
