Headway Summer Scarf

  • Lalela scarves feature inspiring designs from young artists in Lalela after school programs. Proceeds from each scarf sale go towards helping young innovators find their voice and overcome the narrative of poverty through the transformative power of arts education.

Here is the story behind this scarf design:
June 16th, Youth Day in South Africa, marks the day in 1976 when black students protested the imposition of Afrikaans as the compulsory medium of instruction at schools by the apartheid government. In commemorating this day, the Lalela Leadership Learners conceptualized a mural that celebrates and validates all South African languages. They photographed themselves representing the beautifully diverse South African youth and created silhouettes of their heads. These silhouettes were juxtaposed with uniquely South African words and phrases that they use in their everyday lives.
