When you know, you know; there’s simply no mistaking a Clinton Friedman image. The visionary “artpreneur” has Africa wired into his creative brain, but he rejects the clichés or the obvious. Instead he focuses on fine details, patterns, textures and shapes; the light and shade which he pulls out of a carefully selected wild banana leaf, a beetle, a thorny branch or a rock.
Clinton’s focus has always been on capturing “The One Image”. The essence of whatever he is photographing. The one 'whole plant'. The single strelitzia bloom. Utterly simple, but intricately detailed, when you look, and see what he has seen. Subtle yet intense, each image is a celebration of life – bold, graphic, delicate and complex.
Respecting and sharing the goodness of nature is central to Clinton Friedman’s artistic ethos. His first solo photographic exhibition in 2003 - the antique, intricate botanical print revisited, re-imagined, re-born - had an impact that reverberated in South Africa and internationally, launching his career as a creative visionary. Throughout his career his work has continued to celebrate life by paying homage to the natural curiosities of our world.
The Clinton Friedman wallpaper collection, in collaboration with Robin Sprong, has brought Clinton’s artwork to the walls of homes across the world. We can’t get enough of these gorgeous wallpapers, all of which can be customized - in terms of size and color - to suit your space.
So who is the man behind the images? Clinton is a surfer, a hiker, and a gravel biker; a gardener and plantsman; a book designer-publisher; a woodworker; a lover of travel and food. His greatest inspiration comes from South Africa’s coastal city of Durban – his natural habitat and inspiration. He believes he would be unable to make his work if he lived anywhere else. All the subject matter is there, he says, he needs only to polish it.
What’s next for Clinton Friedman, who knows, but one thing’s for sure, he’ll bring a fresh, different perspective. “I relish stopping time in any environment: beneath the ocean, on top of a mountain pass, hanging out of a helicopter, exploring a garden, or in my studio. I choose sometimes to take the familiar and make it seem new, I try to go beyond the surface to celebrate nuance and depth, and to surprise. I see my designs and images as sometimes romantic but never sentimental; gritty but never crude; contemporary but never superficially fashionable. Expect the unexpected…”
We chose Clinton Friedman for Sarza customers because no space is complete without beautiful artwork. His collection really does have something for everyone; muted tones, bright colors, nuanced details or bold prints - but all with that distinctly Clinton Friedman aesthetic. We are delighted to feature a range of Clinton’s talents, from his limited edition canvases, to prints, wallpapers, homeware and accessories.
