Mubuti Dot Weave by Louise Hunt is a unique design and technique within African Sadza Batik. The design draws inspiration from the Mubuti people of the Congo rain forest. The technique emphasizes a natural, imperfect look much like the original bark cloth. Leopard spots with lines give the impression of motion and light and shadows through the trees. Sadza paste was applied to the hand dyed background and while it is still wet a sharp tool is used to scratch lines and dots into the paste. The fabric is left to dry in the African sun. Then the fabric is painted over with black , the paint seeps into these hand scratched lines and cracks. When the paste is washed off, the scratched area reveal the underlying fabric, resulting in a complex, finely detailed pattern of lines and dots.
