Husband and wife team, Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin are Dokter and Misses. The two met at university, when Adriaan was studying industrial design and Katy studying graphic design. This combination of skills and a shared vision of functional artistry is what forms the DNA of Dokter and Misses. Together, they create furniture, lighting and objects that challenge conventions and reinterpret everyday forms.

Based in Johannesburg, this city has shaped the brand and fueled the team’s creative process. The energy, architecture and unexpected juxtapositions of the city are at the heart of each design. These pieces embrace both the chaos and rhythm of urban life, translating it into striking silhouettes and graphic compositions that reject the mundane.

Just take a look at the Paradise table, above left, which explores the tension between sharp and soft, straight and curved. The Penguin table, above right, features a colored powder coated steel base contrasted with a timber table top.
Straddling the line between art and function, this design duo like to experiment with material, shape, and color to create pieces that are as practical as they are beautiful and bold. Take the Easy Media Unit and Desk (below), which serve as practical, colorful focus points.

The design language is deeply rooted in African modernism, drawing from a diverse tapestry of influences, from the geometry of Basotho patterns to monolithic Brutalist architecture and hand painted signage. This blend of global and local aesthetics produces pieces that are both timeless and unmistakably contemporary.

We love working with another husband and wife team whose ethos is so similar to ours; that design should be both beautiful and practical - objects that live with you and make a statement. Their pieces are the perfect way to add something bold, colorful and modern to your home, yet still keep it timeless. Oh and the meaning behind the name? That’s a secret and they are keeping us guessing too!
