Studio Stirling's owner and designer Joanina has an award-winning background in visual art, design and advertising but always had a passion for furniture - particularly hanging chairs. Her vision and passion became a reality when she was renovating a small cottage at her home. She wanted to have some hanging chairs but couldn’t find anything she liked. She decided to design her own and have them manufactured locally. She showed the results to her interior design friends, and they loved them. The rest is history!
Joanina’s designs draw on inspiration from nature and her surroundings – nowhere is this more evident that in the iconic Studio Stirling Twig Pattern.
Whilst the aesthetics are important to Joanina, what also matters to her is comfort and emotion. She aims to create beautiful, functional seating that is also ergonomic. Joanna also believes that her pieces have to elicit an emotional connection. She aims to create an experiential space, somewhere for you to chill and relax.
Studio Stirling is not a big factory environment with computers, CAD drawings and sophisticated machinery. Instead, Joanina creates a drawing, the team make up prototypes and discuss them, sit in them, and work out all the dimensions and details. The team love the hand made aspect and it is a part of their philosophy to use local artisans in the manufacturing process.
Studio Stirling chairs can be found all over the world in a wide variety of settings: Singapore airport, Google head office, T-Mobile offices in Washington D.C., Uber head office in Australia, hotels in London, Las Vegas, and Alaska, as well as in a prestigious Singita safari lodge. The chairs have also been used by therapists and doctors for children with autism and disabled people. They evoke a cocoon, safe womb-like feeling, and the soft motion is calming.
Studio Stirling chairs can be made for indoor or outdoor use. If you choose a Studio Stirling chair it will be fully customized for you. Choose from a variety of steel designs and choose the powder coating color of your choice. You can add upholstery and cushions in a variety of materials and colors, including leather or Spradling Silvertex material – a highly sustainable environmentally-friendly vegan material. The chairs are also available with legs, if you prefer a non-hanging option.
