ABOUT THE COLLECTION by Clinton Friedman:
I had always wanted to make a collection of images that express my life long relationship and attachment to the Indian Ocean. The concept had been stirring in my mind for a couple of years and I knew of just the location that would give me the best opportunity to make these images - a remote, wild and untouched coastline along the eastern shoreline of South Africa, known as the Wild Coast or informally the Kei (formerly known as the Transkei), but it was all about timing.
Winter is the season in South Africa where we receive swell that moves up from the deep South Atlantic Ocean, generated by weather conditions around Antartica. In the winter of 2019, I had been watching the synoptic charts, I spotted a widow, got my gear together and headed for the Kei, a days drive from where I live. As I got my first showing of the ocean I could see this was going to be on. The swell period was up, driving deep from the south, the wind blowing stiffly from the West, perfectly offshore. These two facing forces, when harmonious can create the perfect conditions I had envisaged.
Perched on a small rocky headland that jutted out into the ocean, I had been standing there focused and ready for hours, as the sun dipped and tide settled the moment I had planned and been waiting for arrived.
Unridden is the title of this series of work, for on this day no ocean going women or men dared to enter, it was a day for the ocean to be.
